Working principle of slurry dryer

A rotary slurry (sludge) dryer tumbles the sludge inside a gently inclined, rotating drum while hot gas flows through. Internal lifters continuously lift and shower the sludge through the hot gas stream, promoting heat transfer and water evaporation. Special designs combat stickiness.

Key Steps in Rotary Drying

1. Feeding: Dewatered or thickened sludge enters the higher end of the inclined drum. Consistent feed is important.
2. Rotation & Transport: The drum rotates slowly, causing the sludge to tumble and gradually move towards the lower discharge end due to the inclination.
3. Lifting & Showering: Internal plates called lifters are fitted along the drum’s length. They pick up the sludge and allow it to cascade through the drum’s cross-section.
4. Transferencia de calor: Hot gas (from a burner or waste heat source) flows through the drum, either in the same direction as the sludge (co-current) or the opposite direction (counter-current). The showering action maximizes contact between the hot gas and the sludge particles, efficiently transferring heat for evaporation.
